Company Description
Summit Electric Supply is an electrical distributor keeping current with innovative changes in the way our world is powered. With over 40 years of continuous growth in a $110 billion industry, you can count on Summit's stability. Summit will provide the tools you need, along with your commitment to customer service and drive to excel, to have a successful career in electrical supply distribution.
Job Description
You will be developing new features, extending and maintaining those that already exist on both the front and back end services. These services are written primarily in Ruby and JavaScript, utilizing Ruby on Rails and Ember.
On the front-end, you will be expected to work with components and understand how to build, use and maintain modular code. It is also expected that you are comfortable working with a single page application following DD/AU concepts.
On the back-end, our stack is a composition of many projects and services. Our Rails-based apps are written to utilize Rails' API-only design. Other services are written in Node, using both JavaScript and TypeScript. Our services communicate with one another with either common REST endpoints and the formal JSONAPI specification, or asynchronous processes which don't lend themselves to CRUD patterns are facilitated via AMQP messaging using RabbitMQ. You'll be expected to understand the parts of our stack, but don't need existing expertise with it.
It is expected that you will need to understand asynchronous flow control and how to program within this kind of environment, for both front and back end work.
Other common software you can expect to work with includes Elasticsearch, Kibana, Docker, Docker Swarm and MySQL. Our stack is dynamic and you'll have the opportunity to investigate tools that help facilitate the execution and stability of our e-commerce platform.
Team Layout:
You'll be joining an existing team of developers, content authors and designer. It is a collaborative, in-person, Agile team. Our team follows a two-week iteration cycle, meets for daily stand-ups and opens and closes each sprint with planning and review. Our product owner has been invested in this e-commerce project for over ten years and has as much passion for the project as the developers.
About Our Platform:
We design, develop and ship a successful e-commerce platform that enables Summit Electric Supply's customers to purchase products in a unique business-to-business (B2B) model. This comprises a large product catalog with data from numerous sources, account bookkeeping and management functions, search, ordering, online bill pay, and promotional company information. We are constantly iterating on a platform that integrates well within the business, leveraging existing SAP ERP infrastructure and product data from Stibo STEP PIM.
Back-End Technology Summary:
* Ruby on Rails
* Node.js
* Elasticsearch
* MySQL
* RabbitMQ
* Docker and Docker Swarm
Front-End Technology Summary:
* Ember
* CSS, including SCSS and frameworks like Bootstrap
* Custom components
* Transpiled JavaScript lets us use modern features like async/await
* "Data Down, Actions Up" design
* Responsive design
Qualifications
To be successful in this role you'll need to be comfortable with Ember or Ruby on Rails. You'll also need to be able to pick up on new technology quickly and be able to work well in a team environment as this position is open to remote work.
We prefer you have 3+ years of full stack development experience but we're more interested in your abilities than how long you've been a developer. Be prepared to show off your work during the interview process.
